Chaire UNESCO UNESCO CHAIR

En coopération avec l’UNESCO, l’Université d’Aix-Marseille (Marseille, France) a décidé de créer une Chaire UNESCO en Archéologie maritime et littorale. L’objectif de la Chaire est de promouvoir la coopération entre chercheurs de haut niveau, professeurs de renommée internationale et établissements d’enseignement supérieur du monde entier dans les domaines de l’archéologie et du patrimoine culturel subaquatique.

Le Professeur Jean-Christophe Sourisseau sera le premier titulaire de la Chaire UNESCO à diriger l’équipe de chercheurs confirmés comme Kalliopi Baika et Souen Fontaine, et à coopérer étroitement avec le DRASSM, le Département des Recherches Archéologiques Subaquatiques et Sous-Marines du ministère de la Culture en France, dirigé par Michel L’Hour.

La Chaire travaillera également à promouvoir la ratification et la mise en œuvre de la Convention de l’UNESCO sur la protection du patrimoine culturel subaquatique adoptée en 2001.

Lancé en 1992, le Programme UNITWIN / Chaires UNESCO promeut la coopération inter-universitaire internationale et la mise en réseau pour renforcer les capacités institutionnelles par le partage des connaissances ainsi que le travail collaboratif. Aujourd’hui, le programme implique plus de 700 institutions dans 115 pays. Il comporte également un réseau UNESCO UNITWIN pour l’archéologie sous-marine.


In cooperation with UNESCO, the University of Aix-Marseille (Marseille, France) has decided to create a UNESCO Chair in Maritime and Coastal Archeology. The aim of the Chair is to promote cooperation between high-level researchers, internationally renowned professors and higher education institutions throughout the world in the fields of archeology and underwater cultural heritage.

Professor Jean-Christophe Sourisseau will be the first Chair holder of the new UNESCO Chair, guiding the team of established researchers as Kalliopi Baika and Souen Fontaine and cooperating closely with the DRASSM, France’s Underwater Archaeology Departement under the lead of Michel L’Hour.

The Chair will also work to promote the ratification and implementation of the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

Launched in 1992, the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme promotes international inter-university cooperation and networking to enhance institutional capacities through knowledge sharing and collaborative work. Today, the Program involves over 700 institutions in 115 countries. It also features a UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archeology.
